Been a tuff season for me so far. Because of my work schedule have not been in the woods nearly as much as usual. I guess that is a good problem and I am not gonna complain. Headed to SC this weekend and plan to hook up with team mate Kevin to hunt his lease there. kevin has seen alot of good deer but like me has not been able to take a shot this year. Happy Thanksgiving to all and good luck!

Team Natural Scores

As I had stated earlier if your going to be successful out west on a DIY trip you will have to spend about half your time scouting, glassing, planning, and talking to the local farmers and ranchers (uncle and cousins) will do in this case. It all started right behind the house and I mean out the kitchen window as the sun was peeking up the first day I could see a good sized deer chasing does nothing really to get excited about its only the first day. So I let it get a light enough to see what he actually is and make note of this run of the mill standard 4 point buck for this part of the country. After riding around all day and scouting and going over possible bucks to stalk and options we see the deer again a mile down the road in my uncles corn field. Ok this is doable now theres some sort of cover. As we are glassing out nowhere come this young 7 x 5 buck and is wanting to challenge the other buck. They circle like dogs getting ready to fight only they smell each others rears. Ears pinned and the 7x5 said he didnt want any this year. Darkness falls and my blood is boiling.

Day Two I awake to different weather its now blowing a mix of snow sleet and rain. Another perfect day to ride around in the truck scouting. I look out the kitchen window and low and behold theres these two same bucks out in the wheat field getting a little salad and then off to the corn and a nap. Ok I might be onto a plan here. I talk it over with my father in law and uncle and they said to wait another day to see if he does it again before I try to get on one of them. So we wait around till the afternoon and here they are in the same corn field again. Darkness falls. Ok on the mile ride back to the house I said I have to try it in the morning.

Day Three I awake to clear and very cold conditions (19 degrees) and wind is a steady 20. So we all had come up with a plan and we drove down to the cornfield where we had seen these deer but its still dark. As we drive through the wheat field to get to the corn field I can make out bodies of deer all around me. Luckily they didnt run off they are used to big trucks and tractor and the likes. Ok heres the master plan We park at my uncles combine and act like we are there to work on it and get ready to pick corn. Its now getting light and can see lots of deer heading our way from the winter wheat. I ease out of the truck and quietly walk down the turn rows to get to where theres a bunch of trees and wait for them to come up out of the finger into the corn field. The wind is directly in my face and its pretty darn raw at 19* and theres deer filtering into the field like popcorn on a string down the game trail. All I have to do is wait my turn and not get busted. I sit crouched down next to a cottonwood for what seemed to be an eternity but was only 30 min and heres comes a hot doe and she stops around 18 yards and pees. I think to myself man this plan is really coming together now this is perfect. Not a min later I see some nice antler tips coming through the draw and I ready myself for the shot I have made this shot a million times in my head already and I'm already at half draw with my one piece longbow and hoping he will stop broadside and smell the natural fermones of my little lady friend. He stops and kinda has a grin on his face, curls his lips, and sniffs the spot and then looks directly at me but its too late 630 grains of cedar and steel are in flight. My arrow dissapears into the boiler room and as I watch him stuble away I am in awe and now standing and talking out loud to myself saying "Oh my thats a dead deer right there, come on go down" My arrow snaps off and plugs the hole (One of the downfalls of wood arrows) He has wheeled a 180 and is now bounding away and clears a fence with ease. My heart sinks as I watch him dissapear into the next pasture over and around the bend about 100 yards. I stop and listen and I can hear him coughing and I hear him struggling and kicking the grass and brush. He's down I'll go to the truck and warm up for about 15 min and give him some time. I wait and I claim my prize not the biggest but what I have learned out west is that you take any shot that presents itself and especially when its with a trad bow.

The first pics are some pics of the deer in the fields as I scouted them. Some are grainy and sorry for that but some pics are close to 1000 yards away. and then the last are pics of a what easterners call a 10 point. The deer was harvested with "Ole Trusty" this is a 55 pound one piece longbow that I built. I dont know what the deer scores and really am not all that interested in knowing but if any of you feel like throwing out a # heres a few of the measurements.

spread 25
beams 24
forks 13 and 14
mass 30 and 30
10 scorable points

thanks for looking
Shawn
10 scorable points

Team Natural Scores

Doe was pretty simple scenario. We were driving around up on top of the canyons and looking down into the bottoms and I came to this one canyon that had held deer in the past. I slipped my truck into drive kept it running grabbed my bow and looked over the edge. There they were seven suzies were just laying around sunning themselves as they love to do in the daytime. I quickly scanned from behind the cedar tree I was using for cover and scent but there wasnt a buck in the group. So I figured what the heck lets see if we cant break the ice. With the thermals begining to change and swirl on me I knew I had to do something and fast I hadnt sprayed myself or did I have on amy camo. I really didnt have time to plan my final approach before I got picked off by one ole doe. Well they all decided to stand up at around 35 yards. But heres the one most important thing I have learned about hunting these deer out west and that they are very curious animals and if you stand there long enough and dont move through the stare down phase they will come closer to check you out. I'm perched under a cedar at half draw heart pounding and she finally turned broadside at 28 yards its now or never. Full draw, picked my spot and released followed through and I saw my arrow hit its mark and pass through and stick in the dirt. She bounded the rest of the way up the canyon and into the corn field and was down in sight. This was nice because I just drove the truck right to where she crashed. She wasnt the biggest doe I have shot but she was darn near 200 pounds. Thanks for looking.

Doe was shot with my 3 piece Coushatta 47 pound longbow and a 475 grain arrow with a 150 grain magnus stinger. Toasted her quickly.

Shawn

Blood trails scores again

Bucknaked and myself, went to Eglin AFB for a lil bow hunting.
it was a great trip with some game seen and this good 70lb doe taking a dirt nap.

she came in behind a medium oak tree and was in clear shooting lane at less than 5yds. i had to let her get out to about 12yds before i felt like a good shot placement could be found. she quartered away and i let the rage loose. it was a good hit but the blood trail was less than desirable to say the least. i hit this deer almost perfect behind the left shoulder about 3-4 inches and it exited through the right shoulder, breaking the leg. After the hit she mule kicked and tore out making a 90 degree turn after 15yds and headed straight to the short pines. she made the run to the short pines in less than 3 or so seconds, ON three legs. We lost the blood trail after 5-7 yds in the pines and were stumped. I had another friend hunting with us and he was body searching in the pines and found her about 45 yds in the pines. laying in a basket ball size pool of blood and mouth dripping we could tell the shot was good but the blood trail was rough.

We had a good trip and the last day i had a good size black bear come in to my set up and eat the does tarsal gland that i had put out for an attractant.

Longtrigger Scores for team SkrewItLets Hunt

Been working my lease in Ga. With no luck untill saturday moring. And here's the pictures.

Got in my stand at 6:30 saturday moring. The moon was up and quite bright so I had no problem finding a new tree. The last time I was there I got busted by the deer coming over the hill behind me twice. So I moved up and over about 30 yards and found a new tree.
At about 8:15 I spoted this doe coming up the other side of the hill stoping here and there to take s bite. Looking aroung and beeing very cautious. Waited untill she wen behind an out house on the hill and stood up. Waited untill I could get a clear shot with out hiting any trees. gave a soft grunt but she did not stop. I let the Rage lose and it found its mark.tIS 8:40. She took off and I noticed that my shot was a bit far back.
What a rush I shook for what seemed a long time. I sat and saw which way she went. I then went over What I did wrong and what I needed to do. Took my time geting down. went over to where I shot her and found my arrow YES a gut shot . I knew that I need to let some time pass befor I started tracking, and I need to get my phone from my wife so I left.
My wife was about 30 Min. away from where I was. I then called Big Derf for some advice. Seeing how this was my second deer and my first one to track by my self. With no TNOers there to help I stoped by one of the deer procersser to see if they know of some one with a tracking dog that could help. They Did but he could not help me untile after 12:30.
Went back to my tree stand and found my arrow. By now it was about 10:30 -11. Found gut matter and white hair all around where I shot. Thought to my self lets just see what I can find. Started looking sings of blood or gut matter, but only found some about 10yards away. marked both spots with red tape. I knew which way she went and most every one that I talked with said that I may not find her. So I walked the path that I saw her run and flowerd her tracks. I came to the end of where I could find no more tracks and looked up. There not more than 15yards away She lay.
Now for the fun part this is only the second deer that I have harvested, and now to feld dress the deer.
